What gematria mean

gematria is an ancient form of numerology which is used to interpret various texts and words, including the Bible. It assigns numerical values to certain letters in an alphabet, providing an alternative interpretation of the text. Gematria has its roots in the early days of Judaism and can be found in the Torah, Talmud, Zohar and even in Kabbalah.

Gematria works on the basic principle that a letter or set of letters has a numerical value based on its position in the alphabet. This value is then used to interpret meaning from the words and phrases. For example, if you convert a name into gematria values, each letter's value is added together to form a total. This total can then be interpreted by looking at its context and what it symbolically or numerically represents.

Though it is still used today by some religious scholars, Jewry and Kabbalists alike, its primary use as a method of interpreting text into numerical correspondence has largely been abandoned since ancient times. There are multiple theories as to why this was done but none have been proved definitively yet. However, there is no doubt that gematria has played an important role throughout religious history both as a way to study the deeper meanings within scriptures and as a tool for divination or fortune-telling.
